B I O G R A F I A

Kevin Harris, pianista jazz, propone un’esclusiva combinazione di musica jazz tradizionale e contemporanea.  Nativo del Kentucky (USA), predilige composizioni e arrangiamenti che spaziano da intensi brani poliritmici a ballate introspettive. Harris si è esibito al Blue Note (sia di New York che di Milano), al Scullers Jazz Club, Regatta Bar, Wang Theatre, Jordan Hall, Berklee Performance Center, Wally’s Jazz Café ed ha partecipato alle ultime edizioni del Boston Jazz festival.  La sua musica risente chiaramente dell’influenza di autori quali: Marcus Roberts, Chopin, Keith Jarrett, Danilo Perez e Thelonious Monk.

Ancora adolescente, Harris è invitato dal Sindaco di New Orleans ad esibirsi in occasione  dell’Alpha Phi Alpha Forum al Mahalia Jackson Theater per le Performing Arts. Durante gli anni del liceo è anche stato selezionato per la partecipazione allo show televisivo di rilevanza nazionale “Teen Summit”, che consente l’esibizione di aspiranti artisti.

Il trio fondato da Harris, il “Kevin Harris Project”, ha base a Boston (USA) ed include anche il batterista Steve Langone ed il bassista Kendall Eddy. Uno degli elementi più accattivanti del gruppo e’ nell’elevato livello di intesa che si è costituito tra i suoi membri, sia quando si lanciano in appassionate conversazioni musicali che quando si concedono più semplici scambi scherzosi. Infatti, così come le esecuzioni “dal vivo”, anche le registrazioni riflettono la determinazione di Harris di voler catturare l’attenzione del suo pubblico tramite ricercate cooperazioni musicali tra i musicisti ed i loro interessanti assoli.

Kevin ha conseguito una laurea specialistica (master’s degree) in “Jazz Performance” presso il New England Conservatory (NEC) di Boston USA, ed una laurea di primo livello (undergraduate degree ) in Educazione Musicale alla Morehead State University, KY.

Al NEC ha avuto l’opportunità di studiare con docenti come: Fred Hersch, Mike Cain, Cecil McBee, George Garzone, e Danilo Perez. Inoltre ha potuto esibirsi con George Russell, Benny Golson e Bob Brookmeyer.

Dopo la laurea, Harris si è dedicato alla costruzione di un proprio stile musicale sia cooperando con musicisti riconosciuti ma anche studiando ed arrangiando la musica dei maestri del jazz come Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, e dei più classici J.S. Bach e Beethoven. Il costante desiderio di crescita e di nuove espressioni musicali è chiaramente riconoscibile nei suoi album.

Harris ha realizzato due cd: The Butterfly Chronicles e Freedom Doxology. Il primo, The Butterfly Chronicles, è un album adatto a qualsiasi pubblico. Contiene principalmente suoi brani, e mostra la sua abilità nel creare un’energetica cooperazione tra eccentriche forme musicali e evolute armonie. Il suo album più recente, Freedom Doxology, presenta brani “through-composed” che trasportano l’ascoltatore attraverso storie raccontate da accattivanti note, evidenziando anche un

suo chiaro interesse nel continuare ad esplorare ed arrangiare autori come Monk e Coltrane. Questo album è stato presentato per la prima volta negli Stati Uniti al Regatta Bar di Boston e in Italia al Blue Note di Milano.

Constantement impegnato nella sua città di Boston in programmi che assicurano ai giovani la possibilità di potersi dedicare alla musica, Harris ha anche condotto dei workshop di improvvisazione strumentale in scuole pubbliche e private, negli USA, in Italia e in Polonia.

Durante l’estate del 2007 e del 2008 , il North Eastern University Fusion Art’s Program ha richiesto la presenza di Harris come istruttore di jazz piano per studenti di diverse nazionalità.

Nel 2000, con l’aiuto di “Arts In Progress”, un’ organizzazione di Boston, Harris ha dato vita a cinque diversi “band programs”.  Al momento, Harris insegna piano, tromba, e jazz band alla Cambridge Friends School e  alla Charles River School. Inoltre impartisce lezioni private presso il suo studio di Boston.

Harris dà grande importanza alla comunicazione e in tutte le sue performance didattiche è fondamentale l’interazione con il pubblico.

International Mindedness through Music!

A great opportunity for our school!
Kevin Harris Jazz Trio, a popular American band, will be in Italy for a week of workshops and performances.

The jazz musician Kevin Harris has been promoting and exposing school pupils to a variety of African and Latin American music for years and his work is in line with the IBO philosophy.
Kevin Harris project also promotes the development of intercultural music awareness among children from three years of age to 17.
Our school, along with the most important international and bilingual schools in the territory will have the opportunity to host the Kevin Harris Group on Friday November 20th and offer our students from Pre-school 2 to Gr8 an live, interactive jazz and ethnic music workshop of music improvisation as well as a brief concert where parents will be welcomed.
